Do not miss the already-cult show Brokenoff/Brokenoff organized by French curator Odile Hainaut in her gallery R’Pure with 9 US designers – Brad Ascalon, Dror Benshetrit, Todd Bracher, Stephen Burks, Joe Doucet, Josee Lepage, Frederick McSwain, Marc Thorpe, David Weeks- as a tribute to Tobias Wong. “Blurring the boundary between conceptual art and design, the work of Tobias questioned the value system of objects and pretensions of designers with wit, satire and humor.” says the site.
“In a dream I saw a way to survive and I was full of joy” wrote Tobias Wong.
Dreams can be shattered…
… Yet rescued by those who believe in them. Odile Hainaut is one of them. This young French woman opened her gallery four years ago (Her husband Laurent Hainaut moved to New York to manage the New York headquarters of his successful design company Raison Pure). Last night for the latest opening at the gallery, people were lining up the block, pressing to be part of the event. Major design personalities like UK designer Tom Dixon showed up. ..
Odile is also behind the new NY design event, Wanted Design organized until May 16th as part of the Design Week during ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) .
” The idea is to bring together creativity, savoir faire and the industry, – designers, design companies and craftsmen – in a more informal setting,”
Says Odile. The savoir faire may be French : the Metalliers Champenois who helped restore the Statue of Liberty are participating. Workshops and conversations are organized throughout Wanted Design. Tomorrow a panel on “Cultural impact on design” will reunite star French designer Matali Crasset, Joe Doucet from Whyte Label and others…
